No, I am Not Planning to Name My Child After a Font, but...

Speaking of Helvetica, what are some typographic names that can also be names for people?

Just put the names in the comment area.

Dante and Berkeley come to mind.

Seems an odd question, since many, many of the typefaces I use on a daily basis are named after the typographers who originated them...

dave bastian | Jun 5, 2002 03:12 PM

I guess I'm talking about names that aren't standard names for people, i.e. not Dave Gothic, but could be names for people.

Matthew Bardram | Jun 5, 2002 03:13 PM

Arial. Cooper. Asswipe.

it's crass. you like it. :)

patricking | Jun 5, 2002 03:13 PM

...kinda how I think Chlamydia would be a lovely name for a girl.

su | Jun 5, 2002 03:14 PM

I like Arial, Geneva too. Coopers nice except for that damn expedia.com commercial

matthew bardram | Jun 5, 2002 03:15 PM

Stating the obvious: people need absolutely no encouragement in choosing idiotic names for their children.

FWIW, there used to be a DJ at one of the local radio stations who went by the moniker "Dom Casual" . . . but that was several years ago and, AFAIK, he hasn't worked in the business for some time. I dunno if there's a moral in there somewhere; my advice is to just stay away from font names.

dave bastian | Jun 5, 2002 03:16 PM

i object. i'd pay big money to see a drag queen named "Snell Roundhand." you know she'd be nasty as all get out.

patricking | Jun 5, 2002 03:16 PM

Now that you've gone there, then how long before you pay good money to see entertainers who've co-opted Fountain's names Mothafucka and Doggy Style?

dave bastian | Jun 5, 2002 03:18 PM

Tibor Kalman named one of his kid, Bodoni.

I like Garamond.

kat | Jun 5, 2002 03:19 PM

Aldus. After the Aldus Buchschrift by ol' Hermann, after the great Aldus Manutius of Venice, late 1400s.

Here the name of a person has lent name to a typeface, and backa again :)

Same about Poliphilus, Mrs. Eaves (thought that may just not be a cool first name), Dante, Arrighi, etc pp. Lots of revivals have references in the names to the people that made them or to the people that the books the typefaces were made for were about.

Caecilia, for a newer face.

kai bernau | Jun 5, 2002 03:20 PM

Well of course there's good ol' Joanna by Eric Gill. I suppose that's a bit obvious though.

How about typographic terms? I think Pica would be a great name for someone.

gahlord dewald | Jun 5, 2002 03:20 PM

Now you've gone and done it. I have to make a "What is your porn font name website"!

matthew bardram | Jun 5, 2002 03:22 PM

"Mabella"... I designed this font for my italian girlfriend...

Ramiro | Jun 5, 2002 03:24 PM

Aaahhh - looks like Mr. "Dom Casual" has not gone away... he is now being inflicted on us here in Austin. http://www.1077ktnd.com

Melissa | Sep 23, 2002 04:25 PM

Wow. Several years ago I recall "Dom" saying that he was getting out of the broadcast business. Apparently now he's back, and at the Austin counterpart to SLC's KENZ 107.5 The End (the station he last worked for). I guess you can't keep a good font name down.

Dave Bastian | Sep 24, 2002 10:11 PM

If I'm not mistaken, Dan Savage (alt-weekly sex columnist and This American Life contributor) used to perform in drag under the name Helvetica Bold.

ben shaykin | Sep 25, 2002 02:38 PM

There's a long and very ugly list of font names you could name your children.

Imagine yourself in fourth grade, wouldn't you be one of the kids who beat up Univers Light Ultracondensed?

That's pretty funny, Mr. Coles.....wonder if they got that from here...

matthew | Nov 28, 2002 06:35 PM

I've often ver seriously tried to convince my wife Pilcrow is a really cool middle name. Maybe the next boy :D

I like Lucida for a girl's name.

And there's always Rose Wood =D

Kevin | May 14, 2004 09:31 AM

I would name my kid "Gridnik". If it's a girl, I'd name her FF Unit.

Andrew | May 14, 2004 11:20 AM

“Poor Richard” comes to mind...

Josh | May 16, 2004 10:07 AM

Verdana and Felix are real cool names, dude!

sara | May 16, 2004 11:28 PM

Let me introduce you to my kids: Usherwood, Ferox and Din...

...not as bad as Apple (who'd have thought that Gwyneth was a mac geek)

sichi | May 17, 2004 06:08 AM

Or a Grail geek.

Hrant | May 17, 2004 07:25 AM

I'd be pretty pissed off if my parents named me Giddyup, Hobo, or Mrs. Eaves.

Christian Rocha | May 17, 2004 05:29 PM

I think Mrs. Eaves would be quite a cool name for a cat.

Nikita U | May 17, 2004 09:51 PM

I'd prefer Verdana for gal name as well

Splim | May 18, 2004 12:09 AM

"Hello, I'd like you to meet my child, Akzidenz Grotesk Burgheimer."

Jesse B. | May 18, 2004 12:59 AM

How long before some poor kid gets called Fat Face?

Christopher Skinner | May 18, 2004 08:52 AM

Harry Obese Squeezed

zeldman | May 19, 2004 07:15 AM

Kevin: Heh, "Lucida Grande" was actually suggested as a baby name on one forum, thus getting a mention on Baby's Named a Bad, Bad Thing-- specifically on page 14

codeman38 | May 21, 2004 02:28 PM

Clarendon if it's a girl (Clare for short)

Serif if it's a boy (then when my husband and I get a babysitter and go out we can say we're sans serif)

Kathy Chapman | May 27, 2004 01:33 PM

If we'd had children together...
Ottomat and Filosophia.
Our pet schnauzer: Bembo

ada veen | Apr 5, 2005 06:54 PM

I'd name my daughter Perpetua if it didn't alliterate.

krillips | Apr 8, 2005 07:42 AM

> I’d name my daughter Perpetua...

She would NOT thank you for that.

Kelly Hobkirk | Apr 13, 2005 01:04 AM

message to Gahlord Dewald - there actually is someone named Pica!!
It has never done me any harm.

Pica | Jan 21, 2008 04:38 AM

Pica is Icelandic for the female genitalia, btw.
