Notable Releases SEPT 2002

New fonts of note:

  • Bryant takes the current trend of vernacular signage mechanics to a simple, rounded extreme. From Process.
  • Scene, a clean, squarish sans with tailed ‘i’ and ‘l’, sports a full family of weights and italics. From Sebastian Lester.
  • Betabet is a “hand-sketched” serif that is at its best when small. All 10 weights go for a mere $30 (though only those representing varying darknesses seem truly useful). From Elemeno (Alex Grecian).
  • Glyphic Neue is a sort of ultra-contrasty House Gothic with unicasability. From Typeco (James Grieshaber).
  • Art Deco is a set of three, headlined by the bonny Chic — another Grieshaber design. From P22.

I love fonts, and I love getting new ones for different reasons, but I'm sorry - I don't see the point in BUYING fonts. it seems like just another money-making scheme. just my two cents.

...anyone else want to respond to this first comment properly before i say something I may later regret?

I love food, and I love eating new food for different reasons, but I'm sorry - I don't see the point in BUYING food. it seems like just another money-making scheme. just my two cents.

I love air, and I love to breathe, for different reasons, but I'm sorry - I don't see the point in living, it seems just another money-making scheme. So I think I'll go slash my wrists with a razor (after reading things like that makes you nurture weird things, it might be wise to go to my doctor, or to my dentist: the latter understands the value of my types, at least).

I love cars, and I love driving new ones for different reasons, but I'm sorry - I don't see the point in BUYING cars when I can just take one from the side of the road. it seems like just another money-making scheme. just my two cents.

People aren't buying my fonts, and I'm in denial for different reasons, but I'm sorry - I don't see the point in DENYING I'm in denial. it seems like just another denial scheme. just my two cents.

I love trolls, and I love finding new ones for different reasons, but I'm sorry - I don't see the point in FEEDING trolls. it seems like just another bandwidth-sucking scheme. Oh, wait...

Please indulge me for a moment, and let's draw a parallel here. I know from experience it's a valid one.

I play in a band. We've just finished recording our first CD, and I mean 'we' in the literal sense: no big company bucks to back us up financially. This took us 2 years and cost us several thousands of euros (or dollars if you prefer). That's why it took so long; we had to make money in order to be able to continue recording.

If every single person who loves our music decides to copy our CD because bying one seems like just another money-making scheme, we won't be able to raise the money needed to record any new ones, and those very people who loved our music will end up asking themselves whatever happened to us.

To some of you we may seem whiners who live in denial, but that's the harsh economic reality for both the type and the music trade. Just my 2,032 eurocents.

Boy, you people are tolerant. Me, I think Jessa should be hung up by the heels and bled like a veal calf.

Anon | Sep 24, 2002 06:38 AM

I think the point of exaggeration for effect is simply to drive the point home that yes, ...people design fonts, and it takes a lot of time, and it is insulting to say there is no value to the time and effort it takes to do this type of design work.

I would simply put this to those who say "I want fonts but I will never pay for them"... Please relinquish what it is you for a living to me for no compensation... otherwise you must just be pulling another money making scheme.

Yves makes a very good analogy with his band experience.

mmmmm veal.

Richard Kegler | Sep 24, 2002 06:56 AM

The human sacrifice option suggested by Anon is not bad. ;-)

Back to prehistoric times, and throw away all your computers!

(Maybe we should just see that dumb mail by Jessa as just a provocation).

I think there has to be a lot more *listening* going on here, and a lot less trench-digging. The more you disagree with something, the more you need to open your mind to the underlying stuff.

The more you disagree with something, the more you need to open your mind to the underlying stuff.

Then there's disagreeing with everyone for the sake of disagreeing, even though disagreeing is really the only thing you do.

Would you care to disagree Hrant?

ANON | Sep 26, 2002 09:33 PM

Forget me.

The fact is that many people think paying for fonts doesn't make sense. What are you going to do about it? Throwing fits is not working. So what are you going to do about it?! Try this:

Step 1: Stuff your ego in the closet for now.

Step 2: THINK.
