Welcome Back Fonthaus

First it was called FontHaus. Then they changed the name to DsgnHaus. But the logo was the same. Then they changed the name to ForDesigners.com. Now it seems they’ve switched it back to FontHaus. It’s like the early 90s all over again!

I still have my old copies of the print version of x-height.

x-height was a beautiful thing. Art director Mark van Bronkhorst had a huge 9x13 canvas to work his magic. I often gaze at my Seymour Chwast issue on the shelf and long for the days of great print magazines about type (like ITC’s U&lc — also an MvB gig).

Let’s hope that FontFont’s font sticks around. It’s the only thing left.

Disclaimer: Baseline is too cost-prohibitive to count.

You're forgetting Druk. Honestly, pick one up if you haven't already. Less typography, more type design.

And Emigre magazine seems to be finished with the CD/DVD series, and the next issue is mysteriously described as "To Be Announced..." I'm eagerly awaiting that as well.

I subscribed to dotdotdot for the first year, but it wasn't what I was hoping for, so I had to let it lapse.

Baseline can be hit-or-miss, but when it hits it's great. I just pick it up at the bookstore if I like an article or an ad.

eye has been mostly useful lately. It's rather steep, though.

They've been going by "FontHaus" again since at least last May, but the domain name change must be recent. It was changed to "DsgnHaus" in 1999, and I think "ForDesigners.com" came in 2000.

I'm surprised by the number of people who are surprised they're still around. I think when they dropped x-height they really lost some visibility. There were also a couple of years in there before their website first went up 1998 (not counting the red "coming soon" page they had up for a year or two before that).

I'm glad they went back to "FontHaus." Plus, it's easier to pronounce.

In that last issue they mentioned going back to writing about design. It said so somewhere in the Editor's letter.

I wasn't too thrilled about those CD/DVD's editions. Very pointless.

More of my soapbox on Emigre here. Not meant as a personal plug, just expanding on the topic : )

I bought issue #2 and never finished reading it, I was really excited when I got it but it didn't last long.

My print magazine FORMSUBSTANCE is still in development as an indie design magazine with a heavy emphasis on type and typography. I am hoping it will be an 4-color, advertiser-supported, free-to-professionals trade magazine with an independent spirit. If you are interested in advertising, please email me to request a media kit; if you are interested in contributing, please email me with story ideas.

I've always wanted to know what X-Height was all about, I've never actually seen one. Baseline: I had a subscription since issue 20, and forked over a small fortune to get all the back issues from #11 (and a photocopy of #10), but it's too expensive, with not enough type design coverage (more typography), so I stopped. Eye is very nice, but most of it is not type design. Serif seems to be dead - but if/when #7 finally comes out, I'll buy it. Dotdotdot seems too narrow to me. Good luck with FORMSUBSTANCE. Where can I see a copy of Druk?

Emigre:
I'm very happy they're going back to type/design. Anybody who loves type should support them on that.

Druk. Give the new search gadget a go, Hranter.
