Simonson Takes Home Typophile Tee Trophy

A winner was finally declared yesterday in the Typophile Tee Shirt Contest. Mark Simonson’s hand drawn script charmed the judges. I’m sad to see some of my favorite entries didn’t even make the runners-up list. I suppose guys like Hoefler and Highsmith aren’t keen on the obscure. Maybe they needed to add a couple wildcards like Cina or Kral to the judging mix.

Here are my losers: 1, 2, and 3.

Hmm.. I think the winner is too boring and looks like a baseball-team-shirt or something. I like the script though, but maybe not as the winner for a contest like this.

Or maybe I'm too young and just want something more modern...

the script is beautiful, but i would've preferred something with a bit more concept behind it...

anyway, congratulations to mark!

i'm hoping the #3 gets printed as the 2nd shirt, myself.

might get the 'winner', but I'd rather would've seen a different winner. It's a classy design, but a bit.. well. yes. boring.

Also, depending on the print quality, a design this thin could have crumbling ink pretty fast (unless you avoid dryers).

Bad decision. But congrats to the winner. There were soooo many good ones to choose from. There was one that was a parody of Emigre, that one should have won.

Armin | Nov 27, 2002 08:19 AM

Yeah, I must reiterate. The chosen design is not what I would call a winner. But this is only my opinion. The opinion of the judges was that this was the best. It does come from a very good designer. Seeing this makes me wish I would have entered. Although, I would have felt cheated seeing this outcome.

On another note:
People seem to think that a huge image looks good on shirts. I would say that a design needs to stay with 4 or 5 inches wide. So many submissions have these huge things covering the whole shirt, amking it look quite cheesy. it's not practical for easy production either.

I agree. I would not have wanted to be one of the judges. I'm very honored to have won, but there were lots of others there I would have been happy to have seen chosen (well, maybe not just as happy ;-).

They have also announced that they will be producing a second shirt based on popular vote (although they haven't set up the voting system yet), so there's your chance to make your opinion count.

Mark Simonson | Nov 27, 2002 09:56 AM

congrats, Mark! it is a very nice script. I'm afraid I must agree with the others when I say it's just not my style, but your craftsmanship is superb. it will be quite interesting to see what the popular vote turns up.

Congratulations Mark, it is definitely one of the more elegant solutions.

Thanks Stephen, I'm glad somebody liked one of mine.
Now if Kral was a judge I might have had a chance (leaving a Jackson on his desk at work can do wonders)

As for the size of the images, I agree that the designs generally lack a sense of scale but I think that that is a result of them being both designed and judged as small onscreen images.

We're building the Popular Vote engine and hope to have it online before the cranberry sauce slides out of the can.

We've made an attempt to pull out what we consider the best entries. In selecting the final 20, we've factored in runners-up and shirts that everyone seemed to rave about. The "kerning is a good idea" will be in there, amongst others.

With two shirts to choose from, you'll be able to pick whether you'd prefer the classic style (Mark's) or an edgier one.

Anybody who eats "jelly" style cranberry sauce is crazy.

* THE VOTING BOOTH IS OPEN! *

Between now and December 14th, cast your votes for the second Typophile Tee ("Popular Vote").

Each individual may submit only ONE (1) ballot, but you get three votes, so make them count! You may cast them all toward one favorite design, or you can distribute them as you wish among 2 or 3 shirt designs.

Our top 20 finalists were chosen by Joe and I, based on comments and critiques posted by you throughout the contest, with our own personal favorites thrown in for good measure.

Vote at: http://www.typophile.com/vote/

We'll announce the winner on December 15th, and then it's off to the screen shop!

While I missed out on the contest (I sent them in on deadline, but they somehow lost the entries! :-( ), I was certainly pleased with many of the entries by other designers.

Simonson had a strong stylistic entry there, but like the above replies, the stroke seemed a bit weak and I didn't like it enough to want to wear it as a t-shirt. A very slick design, but not quite shirt-worthy. No hard feelings, Mark!

I designed my shirt entries with the object being the feasibility of screen printing and the aesthetics of the design as something I could proudly wear outside in public. I'm glad to see that the winner/runner-ups all held on to that reasoning.

I liked he winning T, although i think it wasn't the best one. I also think that the whole top 10 is a weird decision (to me!).

Sorry, but I am disappointed with the judging results

fonthausen | Nov 29, 2002 02:42 AM

We appreciate some of the sentiments here. We're hoping we can offset the refined / classy one with something with more tooth or something more obscure.

So, come vote for the tee you'd actually wear (or better yet, buy)! Voting ends December 15th.

Cheers.
