Waiter, There’s an Eye in My Soup

Brian Bonislawsky’s Astigmatic One Eye foundry has been around for a long time, but his freshest collection shows new maturity. (Maybe it also shows he’s been hanging out with Mr. Sandler at the Font Diner, but I’m just guessin’.)

I just received my copy of the new AOE collection in the mail. The CD is neatly packaged in a slimline DVD case, beautifully dressed in classic Astigmatic style. I’ve got the case laying on my desk, just because it looks so good. Inside the cool exterior is a diverse selection of 14 funky display fonts. They’re well drawn, and I was pleasantly surprised to see full character sets in the fonts. It’s evident that Professor Bonislawsky spent a lot of time on spacing and kerning—the type sets quite well out of the box. And there’s more... licensed users receive lifetime access to the bonus fonts in the Illuminati typographic archives, a mix of historic revivals and experimental designs. Lifetime access means you can get new fonts whenever they’re added to this archive. Pretty sweet. I immediately downloaded S.S. Expanded Antique, a “digital revival of a metal typeface by Stevens, Shanks & Sons, Ltd., which was destroyed by Hitler during World War I.” Gorgeous! At 28 bucks, the new AOE collection and bonus material is a ridiculously cheap deal and a nice addition to any type library.

> destroyed by Hitler during World War I

Wow, the guy even did damage backwards in time.

True evil ignores even temporal boundaries.

But as long as it's on an axis, we can bomb it.

Ok, ok, Hrant. I've got a Bush allergy too, but there are political forums for that sort of stuff.

Although I was hoping it would draw more comments and critiques of the typefaces themselves, I do appreciate the pointing out of my typos so that I could fix them.

I still look forward to any critiques you might have of this collection, as I find this site a valuable resource for commentary and advice from fellow designers and peers.

What a waste that you're going to Sweden. (Sorry... :-)

Brian, your new collection seems killer. I promise to check it out soon, and I'm sorry for the flippancy. I guess to me a blog is a highly informal place?

I think my favorites are Mardi Party (I'd love to get a closer look at the construction), and Ruthless: it's like a robot with a soul.

Purchased my copy of the set earlier today--what better flattery than that?
