ATypI has lowered their fees to almost a third of the regular membership price to accommodate the participation of people from low income countries. This resolution came from what was, in the most part (I think) a huge effort from Ramiro Espinoza who gathered hundreds of signatures from people around the world.
I think it’s time for other organizations to take a cue from AtypI. Monetary difficulties keep designers from making valuable contributions to organizations like these.
If by "other organizations" you mean AIGA, then I'm with you. SOTA already offers a reduced membership fee of $35USD per year for all members residing outside North America. This membership level is deemed Global Professional, and carries the exact same benefits as the regular Professional membership level (which is $60USD).
> by almost a third of the regular membership price
To be more clear, to almost a third.
And Stephen, we shouldn't just be talking about membership fees, but also competition entry fees; but also maybe even competition payout amounts (where applicable).
Yeah, I meant AIGA mostly. Can't cite other specific organizations, but a few seem steeply priced.
>but also competition entry fees
I think competition fees are ridiculously high.
Add to the priciness of being a designer the cost of any conference and you have to choose between your mortgage and your continuing education. I don't think it's fair. I mean... the HOW coneference goes for almost $800 and it's pretty lame from what I hear.
It would also be nice to have a ‘graduate’ membership category for people like me who have recently graduated from a design program. The £150 I paid, plus the plane ticket and accommodation when I went to the Copenhagen conference was already very expensive for me. This year I’ll have to probably pay about £400, even though the conference will be in my home town. Plus the £62.50 membership fee! It really is exceedingly high. I’m trying hard to save up...
How do you all afford ATypI? I went to a meeting back when they used to allow volunteers to work - I worked the registration table, set up and broke down the lab, and did some AV setup work - in exchange for reducing the registration cost. I mean, even now, as a professional designer, the registration cost would put me back groceries for a month. I'd love to go, but I like to eat, too. I really would like to go again - I had a great time and learned a tremendous amount. The two academic groups I am part of - one with a membership size and journal structure almost identical to ATypI's - have a sliding scale for membership and meeting registration. They have about 700-900 people show up at their meetings, but then again they run it with a staff of one. A good model, I think.
Does anyone know roughly what the fees are for the Vancouver conference? Are there any provisions for bringing one's spouse along (without paying double)?
