Tantek Çelik:

I have seen numerous instances in modern typography of the use of decorative letter accents, typically as a way of making otherwise boring Latin letter forms appear somewhat more interesting.

...hence Tantek makes an early proposal for CSS Level 4. Mötley Crüe, come on down!

aah Mötley Crüe... that makes me think of the 80's speed metal band Tröjan from the UK - who also thought diersis was cool.
But how metal can you be with a name that translated to swedish would be - "The Sweater".

This reminds me of the approach favored among the script-kiddie/instant messenger crowd wherein the ALT+4 characters are used extensively to add "edginess" to boring ol' typing.

The "Continental" example is a clever international meta-reference, but it still makes me think of 12-year-old poseurs on AOL.

Reminds me of a recent article at The Onion, http://www.onion.com, in which the USA officially puts umlauts on all its vowels to assume a "tougher" image.

Paul, my man! Go back to the article and read the fine print.

Vince Neil just went down on me. Such a kind young man.
