Kare in the News

Typography got rare play (however scant) in a major news outlet today when The Guardian interviewed Susan Kare, creator of the original Mac bitmaps.

Hmm...a rather bland interview.

You should see the one in TYPO #3.
Two of the 7 answers are "No" and "Not necessarily", and two of the remaining are shorter than the questions...

Why "bland"? Did you expect torrid revelations? Her answers are all simple and correct. The only thing I could perhaps take issue with is this excessive love of Garamond ;) , but it's nice that she mentions Miguel's work.

"Icons function more like signage than illustrations"

Obvious of course, but always good to remember. How great, BTW, was her work for the original Mac interface, especially when compared to present Aquajunk.

> Did you expect torrid revelations?

TG: Has your most interesting experience been with Apple or Microsoft?

SK: Well, both. One day Steve Jobs and Mrs Gates -who was apparently there to sweeten the controversial MS-Office versus Netscape deal- cornered me in the copy room and tried to coax me into a threesome.

TG: Ah, a cucumber-and-salmon sandwich!

SK: Exactly. So to get out of it I said I'd make them a special new typographic characters instead. That's how "66/99" quotes were invented.
