Brand New Foundry From the South

After TpG's event in Buenos Aires a few guys from here began to think that a foundry project is possible. So, we started a collective foundry. We called it Sudtipos. We hope you like it. The catalogue includes a beautiful treasure from Mr. Koziupa, a 63-year-old lettering guy that never made a digital font before.

Oh my, Stardust is beautiful up-close. It must look delicious in print. Plumero is nice too. Downtempo reminds me a bit of Emigre's Cholla.

In good Argentinian spanish: Chevere!

Lovely site.

And pretty navigable... even for someone such as myself who doesn't speak Spanish.

If you're really gunning for a few sales from folks up north, I'd suggest using some icons to help folks find the fonts quicker.

More importantly, the fonts are lovely... especially the linked specimen from Mr. Koziupa.

A couple comments:

The bit-mapped font that you use in the about section for each font is really hard to read. It may be my linguistic skills, of course, but the Cs and the Os are really similar.

The prices seem to be marked U$S ... which I'm guessing is just a typo: US$

Finally... what does the name mean? In my head I think "stupidos", which is a bit caustic--but I won't forget it! (Maybe the stupidos.com.ar domain is available too?)

Anyway, lovely fonts... best of luck with the foundry!

If my childhood Spanish serves...

sud = south
tipos = type

Plumera and Star have some original design themes.
Plumera, with the occasional long connecting stroke.
Star, with it's two kinds of "pixel" - a disciplined, complex, display face - Victorian, in a way. Definitely thought provoking...

Slight correction to my childhood recollection, with help from my brother the linguist:

Sud is the adjective form of "south" or "southern." It is used almost exclusively in place names, e.g., sudamerica (South America).

Sur is the noun meaning "south."

Wow, this is great! You guys sure did a nice number there. Great content, pleasant navigation - very "serious", I love it.

As for the fonts, my favorite is Downtempo.

Ah. Cool... thanks Marc.

Much better mneumonic.

>Star, with it's two kinds of "pixel" [...] complex, [...] thought provoking...

Very much so. The two differently shaped elements generate a third element and visual rhythm—the difference between the two, or 'shape contrast'. The effect may be likened to music in which compatible two melodies create the illusion of a third.

Murga looks like a modern descendent of early 15th century Gothic current cursive scripts. Irrespective of any similarities, real or imagined, Murga evokes a sense of a time and place that could be termed narrative vitality or vigor – hence the paperback cover.

I can definitely see Stardust in a Rolling Stone spread for some hip musician.

Armin | Jul 1, 2003 07:45 AM

Stardust has been available from T.26 for several years and yet it looks like it's new to many of you who follow font releases closely. I suppose that's a testimony to how gems can get buried in T.26's huge collection.

Stephen | Jul 1, 2003 11:25 AM

wow, thanks for the nice words.

When I designed Stardust I imagined used on a electronic music album, maybe a dj vinyl. :) Maybe like a texture...
Usually, fonts looks better in the author mind than in the real use.

Sudtipos is like south-guys (type > tipo > man).

We will publish some more Mr koziupa works soon. He is incredible, you should see his handworks for labels. And you will see Plumero and Downtempo in Typecon2003 (were selected with 20 latinoamericans fonts to show there).
Sorry for the bad english and we are working in a translate for the url.

Thanks again,

Alejandro: you should be proud of the work y'all have done.

And don't sweat the English: it's all about the type!

: )

Murga is really remarkable. Mostly because it feels so "genuine". It does not have the often found slickness of many old Letraset.like faces (like many House Industries fonts).
It is really consistent but leaves space for interpretation. I imagine using it would make you feel free. The kind of thing you don't feel like usling, say, a typeface from Rian Hughes (which I love but they are too darn slick and bear the curse of his style. This goes also for many faces from Jon Barnbrook. I have been heavily influenced by his work but I think the only face I could use from the Virus library is Patriot. But I have purchased Infidel)

I'd love to buy Murga, if the occasion arises.
My compliment to Angel Koziupa, and to Alejandro for the unslick digitization (I suppose).

It's also that good design adds value to a typeface. Seeing Stardust at T-26 left me totally unimpressed. I don't like it particularly, but the specimen and the design/photography example on the Sudtipos page is fascinating.
That's why I always insist on the need of actually *showcasing* the faces you sell, both on specimens and on screen.
The only serious way to evaluate them, anyway.

Claudio Piccinini | Jul 11, 2003 09:40 AM

Claudio
Thanks for your words,

I always use to think that just the font designer can show us how the font is good in use.
Stardust was think as a design utility before as a font. The objetive is to work as texture, as shape, as transparence, in many forms but not to use as plain type. If you see how I show the font I negative kerned and incorporate colours and mixed variables.
Its so hard to sell that without a kind of guide.... and it happens with a lot of display fonts.
By other side sometime I bought a font because was great showed at web and when I tried to use it I couldn't.

Obviously we will be waiting your Murga purchase and an example of the work!! niceely used ;)

(sorry for my poor english)

We are happy to announce some new additions to our Sudtipos catalogue.
I hope you like it.

Habanos's caps are great.
And Tiza looks like a younger ExPonto.
