Woody Loves Windsor

Some talk about Woody Allen movie titles at the nicely designed Contact Sheet. Thanks to Jim (whose Coudal, btw, was recently repainted).

I love Windsor. I like the way it works in it's many different incarnations. It's a "pretty" typeface. An attribute lacking from many younger typefaces.
Also, it seems like an Auntie to (I'm guessing) the contemporaneous Cheltenham, and a Great Aunt to Plantin. (A bit of a stretch - I realize - but they're all hardy survivors.)

Speaking of movie titles, does anyone here know which font was used in the opening credits for the film: Signs?

I've been seaching for it for nearly a year now. Any help will be appreciated!!

Teresa | Aug 20, 2003 09:35 AM

It's FF Trixie. The g is custom, though.

Mark Simonson | Aug 20, 2003 11:02 AM

At least on the main title. Haven't seen it, so I don't know if it carried through to the rest of the opening credits.

Mark Simonson | Aug 20, 2003 11:04 AM

Hi all,

does anyone knows who did the movie title for 'catch me if you can'?

Jacques! You haven't been reading your Typographica! Naughty. See this.

Stephen Coles | Aug 20, 2003 12:23 PM

No, thats not it, Mark. Oh well, the search goes on. Thanks anyway!!

[ I can't resist hijacking this thread for a little Google adwords fun. Apologies.]

Lorem ipsum give jewelry my anniversary. Gift carats or clarity and not just a good cut. Or is that karat? Gems, diamonds are good, and pearls luscious, 14k gold for wedding anniversary engagement. Ooh, Valentines day is next year, but a fine love holiday occasion to buy jewelry.

[Okay, another one, just for kicks.]

Dolor sit boat recreation, boating fun vacation resort lodge, waterskiing. Or is that water ski! Lake Powell, swimsuit, diet bikini, sunny holiday this summer. Outdoor watersports for great relaxation. Hot! Ouch, sunburn protection, SFP sensitive skin.

[Heh. I'm coming back in two days to see what Google has cooked up for us.]

Love movie titles..
Bought Catch Me If.. on DVD especially for the intro sequence. The thread here back then was neat and actually pointed me to the movie before it was out here (or perhaps just out).
Don't think much of Windsor though, I don't like the "o"-s hehehe

If you liked the titles for Catch Me If You Can, you can see more work by the same studio (Nexus Productions) here. Though it probably goes without saying, Flash is required.

Teresa--

Regarding Signs... You're right. It's definitely not FF Trixie. I assumed that the poster, trailer etc. would be the same as the film. Often it's not, as in this case. I actually rented the darned thing (well, it might be worth watching!) and I can now tell you with near certainty that the font used was Jonathan Hoefler's Requiem.

Mark Simonson | Aug 21, 2003 02:47 PM

Stephen!

OK...

fonthausen | Aug 21, 2003 02:53 PM

Ahh, yes. I remember those Signs titles now. Occupied more of the bigscreen space than any I've seen.

Stephen Coles | Aug 21, 2003 02:53 PM

Thanks, Mark!!! It is darn close. I'm not 100% certain either, but Requiem is so beautiful that I think I'll go ahead and order it.

BTW: Signs is a great movie - I hope you enjoyed it!!

Teresa | Aug 21, 2003 09:57 PM

You're welcome!!

Mark Simonson | Aug 22, 2003 02:00 PM

Woody can keep Windsor. Him and Albertson's (the West coast grocery chain).

As for the Catch Me If You Can titles, they were the best since Gataca. (CMIYC is a great movie, if you haven't seen it, I almost forgot I was watching Leonardo DiCaprio since his performance was so good.)

Joe Pemberton | Aug 22, 2003 03:25 PM

Joe, you're wrong. Albertson's uses its own flavor of wacky font man Phil Martin's Introspect for its logo.

Stephen Coles | Aug 22, 2003 04:16 PM

I'd order Requiem if there were an OpenType version. I'm only buying stuff I can use on Mac and PC now.

Not nearly as exhuastive as I'd like it to be, but if movie titles are an interest, check out Shill's Video Movies Title Screens Page

Further off-topic, the best thing for me about the Signs DVD was Night's early monster short on the extras, shot (I imagine) with the family Camcorder. Nice example of precociousness.

As for the main attraction, though, I don't know. It seems to me if you cut out all the footage of both Signs and Unbreakable in which nothing is really happening but suspense is supposed to be building, that would leave you with a couple of fun little half-hour films.

Cheshire Dave | Aug 25, 2003 02:20 PM

Hello Teresa
Mark Simonson was very close but not exact.
The font used in the opening credits for the film Signs was:
"Trajan"
