Images of Typography in the Wild

Jon Young, the man at massive type retailer Phil’sFonts.com responsible for the site’s welcome design improvements in recent years, launched Type I Saw Today, a photographic showcase of everyday typography and lettering. While not every image is fascinating there are some nice bits of inspiration, and it’s updated daily, so those of you nerds locked indoors won’t have to go more than 24 hours without typographic inspiration from the world outside. Currently, most of the photos are taken by Young and Phil’s Fonts big cheese Ralph Smith (with a few really nice shots from Aaron Rogers), but they welcome submissions.

Graham Hicks also posts great photos of found type every day at his site itchy robot.

Stephen, thanks for mentioning it. I should note that the idea was originally brought to Phil's by Andrea Morris and the big cheese himself. Itchyrobot has some great samples! I've noticed Grant at Veer does this to. He's a fantastic photographer. So we're just doing our part to add to the mix I suppose. Mr. Hicks, where is Itchyrobot based?

Aw, shucks, thanks.

I got the idea from Ed Fella's Letters on America.

I actually know of another site currently being created that uses the same format, one found type photo released each day. Typophile has started to use more found type on their site too. Does that make it officially a trend?

I'm in San Francisco but there are some pictures in there from Seattle and a few from other places.

I thought it might be interesting to create some sort of gigantic, monstrous internet archive for type photo folks to collect all their photos. I just read an article on the Library of Congress here in DC. I like the idea of deep, endless archives of stuff. I may dwell on this further… Of course there are copyright issues and stuff.

I've been at Phil's Fonts for about half a year now. I'd like to give the credit for the look of the Phil's site to Andrea Morris, who worked here before me.

There is already such a site with thousands of type images from all over the world:
http://www.typemuseum.at
Unfortunately it is only in German but just follow the links in the navigation bar in the middle.

That is fantastic Ralf! Thanks.

Motivation for a North American version perhaps....

I like the concept of "type I saw today" but there doesn't seem to be a constant URL to link to. it changes every day? needs the weblog notion of permalinks for archive pages.

Wow! that typemuseum site is way cool. I wish it was in English too. Thanks to Graham, I too got the itch to start taking some typographical pictures. I may post them someday. Then again a few may already be online (if you know where to look. :)

The page over at phil's is a nice variation in that it includes shots from the digital realm as well as the analog one.

if it's a trend, it's one I kinda like.
