Typography and Lettering of Stockholm

The first thing I notice when I visit a new city are the letters. Yeah, sorry, yet another “type from the street” photo gallery.

So, I'm not alone on this case? ;)
When I comeback from a trip, I'm always surprised to see that most of my images are type only, grrr. We are crazy or what?

Good pictures, thanks.

You people are crazy but these photos are crazy-beautiful, Mr. Stephen.

So, I'm not alone on this case? ;)

Not at all. I just spent a couple of weeks working in London and took 130-something photos. At least 100 were of type. And the rest of them were of bridges and buildings. Oh, and some were of this weird pink spaghetti gunk that I found in the a gutter. But that's it, really.

Stephen, this one looks suspiciously like this nameplate. :)

Anyway, very nice pictures. It seems that the Swedes prefer their letters stacked.

I have to be classified as a "typoholic" too :-)
Funny though, how your home town look
so diffrent by watching these pictures!!!

Makes me realize I have to bring my camera
with me more often...

When my sister returned from a Northern European excursion, she told me I'd appreciate the signage. That "school" photo is what I had in mind. Clean and icy. But maybe Swedish typography is completely seperate from that stereo"type"??? The other photos are so much more loose than I would have expected… More like my own, gritty Pittsburgh, PA. Interesting indeed.

Jon Young | Oct 10, 2003 12:05 PM

…stereoTYPE. There, that works a little better. Wanted to make sure I nailed that incredibly funny play on words.

Jon Young | Oct 10, 2003 12:07 PM

Jon, you are also seeing Swedish typography through my biased eyes. I probably captured the older, more traditional side of the city's signage because that's what catches my eye. But there is definitely a trend for crisp, clean typography among new design here. I'll try to represent more of that as I add to the album.

Great photos, Stephen! Thanks.

Fine, fine photos! Too bad you didn't go to Gothenburg (my home town), which, is the BEST city in Sweden ;-)

Fraggelpjott | Oct 14, 2003 06:40 AM

Fraggelrock,

I am living in Sweden for a year, so I do plan to visit Göteborg and the south before I leave the country.

Welcome to Stockholm Stephen,
I thought I’d let you in on the secret of the little red signs. They tell you it is 2.2 meter from the sign to a water well in the ground, under a iron lid marked with a V (as in vatten). These are used when the water pipes need to be attended to.

Ola Forssblad | Oct 19, 2003 12:05 PM

Thank you for that, Ola. I thought it might be something utility related. You are in Stockholm as well, I presume?

Stephen Coles | Oct 19, 2003 03:28 PM

Great perspective and color. I like what you are putting together. Your artistic talents can be attributed to your genetics!

Stephanie Cannon | Nov 23, 2003 07:51 PM

Aww, thanks Aunt Stephanie, but surely you are biased.

I'm guessing the "Silicon Bar" is somewhere in Kista? I have to check it out some time; my school (Masters of Media) is in Kista.
