The Cure's The Top, The Head On The Door, and Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me all had this sort of lettering and were released in 1984, 1985 and 1987, respectively, well before Living Colour. There were probably other precedents even further back.
Something small falls out of your mouth and we laugh!
And let's not forget the B52's Cosmic Thing. But that came later.
i'm a bit shocked. he is one of the guys whos work forced me to try this "typecreation-thing" for myself.
i bought his book TYPE &c. a couple of weeks ago - never thought that this could be a retrospective nor estate. he wrote in the introduction (feb. 2003): "I discovered a new balance after 15 years, providing a new foothold for the future."
We are very sad to inform you that Frank Heine passed away last week, after a long struggle with cancer. During this time, as he was battling this debilitating disease, he was amazingly productive, designing and producing the Dalliance and Tribute type families plus type specimen booklets, and a monograph about his work titled "Frank Heine: Type&c.: Personal and Commercial Works 1988-2003."
Frank will be very much missed, and his passing away is a great loss for design and type design.

Very sad indeed. An inspirational designer.
Deepest condolences to all of his friends and family.

Tribute is brilliant, and Dalliance is one of the most singular and important designs in the past several years. It is also one of Emigre's best selling packages these days. Type will suffer in his absence.
