Paper, Ink, Fresh PerspectivesAnnette reminds us of an exciting and important show at one of my favorite places in the world (and where I learned a good portion of what little I know about printing): the San Francisco Center for the Book. Paper, Ink, Fresh Perspectives: Letterpress at SFCB will open at the Center's relatively new 300 DeHaro location with a reception on Friday, November 21 from 6 to 8 pm. Entry to the reception and the exhibit are free, although donations to the SFCB, one of the finest resources for printers and book artists in all of California, are always appreciated. Come see the emerging stars in tomorrow's letterpress world at this exhibition of original, genre-bending work printed at the San Francisco Center for the Book. Curator Katherine Case has chosen posters, poetry broadsides, advertisements, stationery, artists' books, postcards and more. Some were printed by newcomers to the letterpress world, graduates of our introductory courses who are just beginning to print solo. Others are the work of more established artisans, using the Center's presses and platemaking equipment. With the popularity of letterpress printing soaring, this exhibition captures the cutting-edge spirit and innovation of the people who are redefining the art and craft of fine printing. The printers, designers and book artists in this show are worth watching. And if you've ever wondered what the other students in your letterpress classes went on to do, well here's your answer! The exhibition runs November 21 through January 16, 2004. The opening reception, from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, November 21, is free to the public. At the opening, Bay Area printers will be selling their wares at a Trunk Show. With the holidays just around the corner, this event is not to be missed!
