Flashy Graphics for Cool Layouts

Multi-talented designer Val Fullard (Mambo, Science) has turned her hand to a different kind of layout -- the model railroad. Historically accurate miniature flashing signs (click though for animated GIFs) nail the retro vibe for enthusiasts whose virtual worlds make like second home to characters from a Hopper painting or a Spillane novel.

Great find! I'm in love with some of these. Something about reality in miniature is just so goshdarn appealing. I've always adored architecture models and Micro Machines for the same reason. The typography and font choices could be more appealing, but I suppose realism is the goal.

The Twin Cities Railroad Museum is an awesome display of railroad mania. I wonder if Val would do some commissioned signs, since the museum is trying to accurately recreate the city scapes.

Two photos from a book on model railroad scenery I have:

The model was on an O-scale layout and the article goes into great detail about how it was constructed.

I happen to be into model railroading a bit (mostly in arm chair mode), so this topic piqued my interest. I've even thought of trying to write an article for one of the model railroad magazines about how to use era-appropriate type. But I came to the conclusion that people who care already do a good job of it, and those who don't wouldn't read it. Still...

This project was an extremely enjoyable one, as it afforded the opportunity to pay hommage to the retro style I love. With regard to some of the font choices, I must confess to a perverse pleasure in using something as ugly yet ubiquitous as Brush Script or Revue.
