TypeCon2004 Report -- Day Three Addendum
First Official Typographica Desktop

I'm staring at it in use right now, and I have to say, Joshua, it's a work of art. We should move this computer to the gallery!

We'll have to compile all of our photos and create an official Typographica desktop image collection – edited, of course.

edit, why on earth would you need to do that;) there's no nipple shields showing, at any rate.

Does its possible to improve a bit the spacing/kern between the T and y? :-o

Oh Jean. So picky! No, that is not possible. The original PSD is long gone, and what you're looking at is a picture of a picture of a picture. Besides, altering the image would remove the whole spirit of the piece - created, as it was, while battling a serious case of drunken imbalance.

And the party was killer. Topless men and bottomless drinks. Just watching font geeks go nuts in a receding haze of reality was the most fun I've had in a while. Oh, and thanks Shelley.

Not only that, but Trickypup is also one of the coolest people I've ever met. Moreover, she actually revealed to me the secret of her extreme coolness (free of charge). Pretty, cool, and generous, then. What more could one ask for?

Hmm, Level-3 I haven't seen yet. Most of them are with you Hrant, when you were passed out. Now the question is, who's camera are they on?

Uh oh - then maybe forget I asked... But Stephen assured me he kept an eye on me (read: my corpse) to limit the damage. If not I'll just have to trigger some solar flares to wipe out memory cards or something...

BTW, technically I don't think it's "passed out" if you consciously take a decision to shut off - which I did - I actually remember everything, including getting off the floor and moving to the sofa (the bathroom was too far). So I was just "sleeping"...

dude, that totally qualifies as passing out. no shame, though :) and i don't know what people are going on about on typophile about tongues being in ears, really, it was all for show. except for the boob squeezing.

Then I need a much stronger term for something on the order of what once happened to me in college (circa 1988), where I went down fast, couldn't remember jack, had to be carried away and dumped in bed, was out for 16 hours*, and had some trouble taking a test four days later.

* I remember waking up, sitting up and gazing out the window at the sky for hours, wondering why it's getting darker instead of lighter, if it was the next morning, except it was actually the next evening.

I love that the TypeCon report receiving the most comments by far is the one related to drunkenness. Something tells me the people of typedom are just begging to loosen up.

Andy, I'm floored. How did you get such amazing pics? Is it you or the camera? Some of those need to go in a font lore museum. Like that Downer/Bruno one is eerie as hell.

uh oh, i have a funny feeling i'm in some of those shots. either me or a puppet. totally forgot about that until now.

My pictures are up here. There aren't a whole lot of them because I forgot to take my camera with me most of the time.

Thanks Hrant! If anyone wants to use copies of them just be sure to give me credit...go ahead and ask me for higher-res versions if necessary. A lot of it is luck/chance, but I just keep my eyes peeled and my camera on.

Andy, I agree with Hrant: you're a shit-hot photographer (pardon my French). I might take you up on your offer. :)

For those that couldn't go to Typecon, how were the hand-lettering workshops with Downer? What kind of exercises were done? Just outta curiosity.

I took the Script lettering class with Downer. There were some beautiful pieces of work that he brought in and of course it is always a treat to watch him at work. Though I was a little disappointed that it wasn't more hands on – we only had about 15 minutes at the end to try out the lettering for ourselves.

I made a promise (unspoken and silent) to make a more concerted effort to read typographica. Especially now that I've met Josh too. :^/

The parties, that I didn't sleep through, were fun for all. But for me the two high points of the event (of the sessions I actually was able to attend) were:

1. The award for typographic achievement to Ed Benguiat. The stories shared by Ilene (Strizner) were heartfelt and made me realize how much I missed out on not having a real mentor in my life. For someone so talented, giving, and regarded, Ed accepted the award with humor and humility. And not to forget the "Ed and Ken" show. They really should do a follow up to that. The typefaces on which House is currently working will be a wonderful addition to my library. I hope they follow up with even more from the PLINC library.

2. The Digital Rights Management session. Although I felt it was directed very well, I do think there were some great ideas put on the table. I'll be sad to miss the follow-up in Prague.

Seeing and meeting and mixing and connecting and learning and listening ... even though I didn't get to the sessions (accept 3) I'm happy I went. Deep discussions (in person) are few and far between for me. I'm grateful for such an organization.
