Gloria Stuart at Mills College

Kathy Walkup, director of the book arts program at Mills College and a regular instructor at the Pacific Center for Book Arts, lets us know of a very interesting discussion with and celebration of the great printer Gloria Stuart.

Stuart, of course, started as a Hollywood ingenue in such films as The Old Dark House, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and The Invisble Man (and more recently in My Favorite Year and Titanic), and in 1984, at the age of 74, turned her interest in book arts and typography into a career as a printer and bookmaker. Her press, Imprenta Glorias, is ceasing operation, and as a result Ms. Stuart is donating a large collection of metal foundry type - some of it especially rare - along with her press and other items from her studio to the Mills College Book Arts Program in a bequest.

You are invited this April 9th to the Heller Room at the Mills College Library for an informal discussion of Ms. Stuart's highly individual artists' books. A number of the books will be on display (through May 26th) and a reception will follow the exhibition.

For further information, please call 510.430.2047, and for directions to the campus visit www.mills.edu.
