It Came From the Big Screen!

Steve Hill’s Title Screens Page is a massive assemblage of filmic typographica. Lots of grand hand lettering there, particularly for the older films.

Notable: After the Thin Man / Dr. No / Things to Come / I Married a Monster From Outer Space / Four Feathers / The Corpse Vanishes / The Man They Could Not Hang / Unknown Island / The Wizard of Oz / The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (Dr. Seuss’s wondrous and only non-animated flick. I was fortunate enough to catch this one at a one-night screening last week. I highly recommend it.)

Thanks to Coudal for the link.

Typofiends! Meet in Greece

I'll be at ATypI in Rome. Hopefully any North Americans who are unable to get to Europe this September will be able to come to next year's conference in Vancouver.

This year, there is also the Greek type conference in Thessaloniki at the end of next month. The registration fee is 180 euro (half for students), which is a lot less than ATypI, and the speaker line-up is very impressive. There are a number of people on the programme whom I have not met before, but whose work I admire very much, e.g. the type historians Lotte Hellinga and Hendrik Vervliet.

TypeCon2002 in Toronto

Speaking of type conferences... if you can, check out TypeCon2002 in Toronto July 12-14. A cool oasis of affordable typographic fare presented by SOTA and The TypeClub of Toronto. Note that we've just issued a Call for Entries for the TypeGallery. See you there?

Berry on Stauffacher

FYI, John Berry's latest type related article at creativepro.com is about Jack Stauffacher's letterpress experiments with wood type, a few of which are currently being shown at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Also, I work in font production at Agfa Monotype, and I'm not happy with the look of the web sites.

Going to ATypI?

Nice to put a face on Claudio, who I have been conversing with via email for a few months. Speaking of faces, who here is going to be at ATypI this year? I used to go to ATypI regularly, but now that the registration costs have soared far beyond the reach of my meager paycheck, I fear that after that and my ticket to Rome I'd be sleeping under the arches of the Colosseum.

Piccinini Interviewed

Planet Typography's Typographic Times has an interview with Claudio Piccinini, and a profile of a new typeface he's working on, Neoritmo, due for release later this year. The alternates look fun.
