Fontifier
David Johnson-Davies, creator of Identifont, brings us a new online type application. Fontifier will generate a TTF based on your handwriting. Just print the template and fill it, scan it and submit it. There’s no charge while it’s still in development.
Sadly, both the Fontifier and template links are broken, or just overwhelmed.
Thanks to an appearance on Jeffrey Zeldman’s site, I imagine the Fontifier server is taking a pounding.
Looks like Chris Pirillo spilled the beans.
What does that mean, Jim?
It is a good thing that I go to Chris Pirillo’s blog every now and then. I think this might be something to try out.
The problem is… at least for me. Is that when you start drawing your characters you think about it too much. I keep messing up, and then I drift farther and farther away from my actual handwriting. Perhaps it’s funner to scan characters from stuff you wrote when you weren’t thinking about designing something, then applying them to the template. Is ScanFont part of the inner workings of this, I wonder.
Fontifier seems to have recovered from the assumed pounding of being extensivly linked.
Cheers
John
Anyone try this yet?
Ok, forgive a quick digression from the Fontifier topic for a moment and help me out here. I have a question for those who know his site: Who is Chris Pirillo and why do so many people read his mammoth-sized text? I checked out his blog to see why over 500 visitors in two days are coming to us from his link, but I think I missed the interesting stuff over there.
Stephen I was trying to be funny.
Ah, thanks Jim. Now I’m just trying to figure out who he is.
Here is my first experiment using Fontifier.
Jon, good point.

I tried it out (example, ttf). It’s a little bit jaggy at big sizes in Illustrator, but it’s fun. (:
Here is a sample of Joshua’s font. Looks like no kerning is included. And no baseline assistance? Fun forms, though, chief!
Having some problems with this… when I go to submit the gif of my handwriting, it tells me that I’ve “interlaced” the file, even though I haven’t. What gives? Just a bug in the program?
This is fun – my handwriting is atrocious but it’s still fun (and bizarre) to actually see it in a font. Next time I need to use a thinner tipped pen. I used a sharpie, HA!
Example of my font
whenever I go to submit, theres an error loading the page. it’s making Me angry.
i upload my font NOGA for a test. fontifier make a grounge version off my font :-)

Pretty clever test!

i also get an error when trying to submit
It looks like a great system, although the Submit button returns a broken page – and I even waited several days for the traffic to die down.
FYI, Chris Pirillo is an important Internet entrepreneur and the founder of Lockergnome.com.
His long-time hosting gig on TechTV’s “Call for Help” is one reason for all his attention and readership.
Chris Pirillo = Lockergnome – he was also a host on TechTV’s Call For Help show for a while.
Chris Pirilllo is from Des Moines, Iowa. If you’ve ever watched him on TechTv you’d know why he isn’t on there anymore. He knows very little about the actual computer problems thrown at TechTv and often would have to “research” the problem with a promise to put the answer on the TechTv website. This tactic created to much extra work for the website developement team and was hurting ratings because we live in a “NOW” world. People want their answers now and not have to go researching for it. NOt to mention that some of the people who could operate a telephone can’t necessarily handle surfing the Internet with thier computer. I knew Chris growing up and he’s not that intelligent and when I saw him first appear on TechTv I about flipped – the channel.
> he’s not that intelligent
Hey, remember he was on TV!!

Seems like Fontifier is down…..
yup.. I tried to use it earlier and it went offline while I was uploading my form. :(
I cannot seem to get it to work. I’ve tried everything. Can someone E-Mail me and tell me what way to put the image? Wheather I should cut off borders, or not… It would be really helpful for someone to actually E-Mail me their form they uploaded.. so I can get my straight. Thanks. [danieltaylor @ vnet.net]
I’ve been trying to do this for nearly 3 weeks. My first attempt–on Jan 9–worked, but every other time the site hangs and returns an incomplete page. Grr.
I tried using Fontifier earlier today and got hung up in step 5. Where does the font file download to? I couldn’t find it.It took a long time to upload the GIF file and almost as long for the red arrow to go to Step 5. Then the famous “this page cannot be displayed”window….is it a problem with the website?
If you’re having trouble with Fontifier try contacting the developer directly.
Fontifier now charges ($9 US) for the ttf file. It also, has a new template with more symbols to use… #%^*[]{} are now on it.
If you want handwriting font produced by professionals, FontShop works with ParaType to create a “HandFont” for $179.
I didn’t have too much trouble uploading my template. We’re on an ADSL connection. When it wasn’t delivered instantly, I contacted David who replied straight away with info on what to do, & I got it immediately.
Like Mike (Jan 8), I don’t particularly like my handwriting either – lol – but I’m happy to have my own font & found David to be very helpful and available.
