Typeface Review

Heron

Another typeface by Cyrus Highsmith, another safe pick for the “best of” list. This year, though, it’s hard to decide what’s best of all the releases of one of the most talented and influential men in the American type business.

In 2012, not only did Highsmith create an outstanding book about typography, he also started a tumblog with his adorable drawings, sketches, and prints (along with designing such amazing typefaces as Serge and Heron).

If you’re sportier than me, you might have spotted it in Men’s Health magazine by now. Heron is a perfect fit there, and a prime example of how to incorporate certain characteristics in a serious typeface. In this case, you can feel sports, strength, and dynamics in each of the sans and slab styles, both of which bear Highsmith’s unclassifiable signature, making Heron another versatile and unique workhorse superfamily.

Christoph Koeberlin cares for FontFonts by day and for Typefacts at night. Currently he teaches his sons numbers (Felix) and reading crappy school typefaces (Julian).
