Bembo Bedding

Sometimes I like a nicely set block of text so much I want to sleep with it. Thanks to our friends at Foreword for pointing us to MoCoLoco, a sort of Gizmodo for product and furniture design.

If they’d come out with a King Lear version I’d totally go for it.

It’s also cool to wallpaper with old magazine pages/posters. Musician Beck papered a room with old calligraphic legal documents or some such thing.

WTF? I cant find this anywhere, I want to BUY IT!

Hildebrant — It’s available at Caban, which is Club Monaco’s home-furnishings chain. It might only exist in Canada, but it might be worth a request via the website.

Seeing those curving, swooping lines of Bembo, and Stephen’s comment about sleeping with type, reminds me of a recurring dream I had when I worked as a hot-metal comp, when I would spend days on end doing hand work on long galleys of Bembo hot off the Monotype caster. Many nights I’d dream of being very tired at work. In the dream I’d lay my arms on the type, as a kid in a cartoon does when going to sleep. Then I’d lay my head upon my arms, and just as I fell asleep [in the dream] I’d see hundreds of lines of type begin to fall over in beautiful arcs of Bembo, Bulmer, Centaur, Caslon. The odd thing: it was never what I considered to be a bad dream: the type was just as terrific looking falling over as it was standing upright in the galleys. As soon as I switched from hot metal to pixels, that dream quit; I haven’t had it in over 15 years. I wonder what would happen if I bought that duvet cover.

Anyone else dream about type? Sweet dreams to all of you.
